Our Review
Matinée Dog gives Mary Poppins a magical 100%. A truly spectacular performance that packs, wit, colour, magic and an exquisite score to accompany. When Mary soars up over the audience at the end you will be in awe of what you have just witnessed. Mary Poppins is loved worldwide and this show with a stellar cast we believe is the jewel in the crown of West End productions. Disney theatrical do not dissapoint with this magical extravaganza. Zizi Strallen and Charlie Stemp lead a very talented cast and orchestra through a 2.5hr show that keeps on giving.
From the moment the orchestra start to play until that magical moment when Mary flies above your head you will be grinning like a cheshire cat and tapping your toes to the magnificent songs throughout.
The choreography in “Step in Time” will blow your mind, almost as much as the magic that happens at every opportunity, beds that make themselves, cupbards that fix before your very eyes to that memorable bag that is seemingly bottomless.
Having seen the original 2004 production, the UK touring show and this re-imagined, re-energised West End production we can safely say that this is one of the most magnificent spectacles around. Zizi and Charlie make this so much more, the chemistry between the two is noticeable from the moment they step on stage. You can see that they just love to entertain and it is truly wonderful to see.
It really is SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS. This number will also have you in a spin, the speed in which the cast end up spelling it out is bewildering. One of our all time favourites. This show will never cease to amaze us here at Matinée Dog. The standing ovation each and every performance we have seen received was truly deserved. Having also ushered this show during its visit to Theatre Royal Plymouth, it is wonderful to see the smiles on everyones faces as they left the auditorium at the end of the show, most of them still singing the tunes they just heard and noting that they must return! Most do too.
Prince Edward Theatre
The Prince Edward is located in the heart of Soho within easy access of several London Underground stations. It is a stunning Edwardian theatre that has kept all of its former glory. The theatre itself has 5 bars, a cloakroom (first come first served, this can get very busy and fills up very quickly), it even boasts an exterior balcony where you can watch the bustling Old Compton Street pass by underneath. The auditoruim is lavish and keeps you occupied even before the show starts.
Final Thoughts
Matinée Dog just loves this show, we have seen it several times (6 as patrons, even more so as Usher) and it honestly never fails to amaze us. Every part of this show is Practically Perfect in every way and we just cannot fault it. In our eyes Zizi Strallen is Mary Poppins she portrays her sublimely! The costumes, the set, the lighting and more importantly the magic used throughout the performance is just simply unforgettable. Have you seen the show?
