Phantom of the Opera 2027 Cinema Release Announced

The Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema release has been officially announced, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary West End musical set to be filmed live at His Majesty’s Theatre in London.

For the first time in the musical’s history, the London production will be captured live at the theatre where it all began four decades ago, before being released in cinemas internationally in 2027.

And they have certainly picked the right night to film it.

Cameras will capture The Phantom of the Opera’s 40th anniversary gala performance on 9 October 2026, with the current anniversary company joined by celebrated alumni from across the show’s remarkable four-decade history for a special curtain call.

An exact date for the Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema release has yet to be announced, but the filmed production is confirmed to arrive in cinemas internationally during 2027.

Phantom of the Opera marks 40 years in the West End

The filming comes as The Phantom of the Opera celebrates an extraordinary milestone in London.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical opened in the West End in 1986 and has gone on to become one of the most successful stage musicals in the world.

According to the production, Phantom has now been seen by around 160 million people, playing in 229 cities, 54 territories and 23 languages.

Four decades later, the chandelier is still falling at His Majesty’s Theatre – and now audiences around the world will get the opportunity to experience the London production on the big screen.

The live capture is being produced by LW Entertainment, Cameron Mackintosh Limited and Universal Pictures Content Group.

Brett Sullivan will direct the production for the screen, with Dione Orrom producing. Sullivan’s screen credits include Hadestown, while Orrom produced the cinema release of SIX the Musical Live!.

Who is in The Phantom of the Opera 40th anniversary cast?

The international anniversary company is led by Jordan Donica as The Phantom, with Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé and Rhys Whitfield as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny.

They are joined by:

  • Sierra Boggess as Carlotta
  • Matt Bateman as Piangi
  • Joseph Millson as Monsieur André
  • Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin
  • Joanna Riding as Madame Giry
  • Millie Lyon as Meg Giry

The anniversary company will appear at His Majesty’s Theatre until 21 November 2026.

The 40th anniversary gala takes place on 9 October 2026, when former cast members from across the production’s history will join the current company for a special curtain call.

That anniversary performance is the one being preserved for the Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema release.

When is The Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema release?

The live West End production of The Phantom of the Opera will be released in cinemas internationally in 2027.

An exact Phantom of the Opera 2027 release date and list of participating cinemas have not yet been confirmed, with further details expected to be announced at a later date.

Importantly, this isn’t another movie adaptation of the musical.

Instead, audiences will see a live capture of the West End stage production at His Majesty’s Theatre, offering people around the world the opportunity to experience the show as it appears at its original London home.

For Phantom fans, that alone should make the Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema event something rather special.

A new Phantom of the Opera recording is coming too

The cinema announcement isn’t the only way the musical is celebrating its 40th birthday.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has returned to the original analogue master tapes of the 1986 Original London Cast Recording, creating a newly remixed edition of the score.

The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix) will be released digitally on 9 October, coinciding with the musical’s 40th anniversary.

Vinyl and CD editions will follow on 6 November.

The new edition restores previously unreleased sections and includes material from Lloyd Webber’s personal archive.

Forty years and Phantom is still going strong

There are very few West End productions that reach their 40th birthday, and fewer still that remain quite as instantly recognisable as The Phantom of the Opera.

From the chandelier and Maria Björnson’s spectacular designs to songs including The Music of the Night, All I Ask of You and Masquerade, Phantom has become part of West End history.

Capturing the show at His Majesty’s Theatre feels like a fitting way of marking those four decades – particularly with former company members returning for the anniversary performance.

And for those who have never managed to get themselves to His Majesty’s Theatre, the Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema release should provide a rather good alternative.

The Phantom of the Opera continues at His Majesty’s Theatre, London, with performances currently on sale into 2027. Further details of the Phantom of the Opera 2027 cinema release will be announced in due course.
