Welcome to the 60s, where everyone’s grooving to a brand-new sound! Enter our vivacious heroine Tracy Turnblad, who has big hair, a big heart, and big dreams to dance her way onto national TV, and into the heart of teen idol Link Larkin. When Tracy becomes a local star, she is able to use her newfound fame to fight for liberation, tolerance, and interracial unity in Baltimore. But can she win equality – and Link’s heart – without denting her ’do?

Hairspray has embarked upon its UK & Ireland tour this week and has been welcomed to a rapturous applause and standing ovation nightly here in Plymouth. A joy to watch and a pleasure to work. Matinée Dog gives this show 4.5 stars! A delight for all of your senses.

Brenda Edwards shines out in this show as Motormouth Maybelle her solos are second to none and make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on edge! Katie Brace brings energy galore to this stunning version of Hairspray, appearing throughout the show in almost every number she really is a rock to the show. Norman Pace and Alex Bourne (Wilbur and Edna Turnblad) have a chemistry that makes you smile throughout, the song “You’re Timeless To Me” will have you in stictches that’s for sure. Rebecca Thornhill plays the villain expertly, you cannot help but fall in love with her by the end of the show “I just don’t know what to say”.

The set could be bigger and more extravagant, we were expecting a little more but the lighting really ramps this show up to a new level. The show has choreograpghy that is precise and delivered smoothly packing a punch! Just you wait to see the amount of energy the cast have in the finale number “You Can’t Stop The Beat” and trust us you really cannot!  Almost everyone was on their feet and dancing by the final curtain call.
