Our Review

Matinée Dog reviewed this show in London not that long ago and we still give Mary Poppins a magical 100%. A truly spectacular performance that packs, wit, colour, magic and an exquisite score to accompany. When Mary soars up over the audience at the end you will be in awe of what you have just witnessed. Mary Poppins is loved worldwide and this show with a stellar cast we believe is the jewel in the crown of Musical Theatre productions. Disney theatrical do not dissapoint with this magical extravaganza. Stefanie Jones and Jack Chambers lead a very talented cast and orchestra through a 2.5hr show that keeps on giving.

From the moment the orchestra start to play until that magical moment when Mary flies above your head you will be grinning like a cheshire cat and tapping your toes to the magnificent songs throughout, not to forget you should be able to spell that super word before you leave and if not where were you?

The choreography in “Step in Time” blew our minds, almost as much as the magic that happens at every opportunity, beds that make themselves, cupbards that fix before your very eyes to that memorable carpet bag that is seemingly bottomless.

Having seen the original 2004 production, the forst UK touring show and now this re-imagined, re-energised UK Tour production we can safely say that this is one of the most magnificent spectacles around. Stefanie and Jack make this so much more, the chemistry between the two is noticeable from the moment they step on stage. You can see that they just love to entertain and it is truly wonderful to see. Both Stephanie and Jack have also played the title roles in Autralia!

It really is SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS. This number will also have you in a spin, the speed in which the cast end up spelling it out is bewildering. One of our all time favourites. This show will never cease to amaze us here at Matinée Dog. The standing ovation each and every performance we have seen received was truly deserved. Having also ushered this show during its first visit to Theatre Royal Plymouth ad now its second, it is wonderful to see the smiles on everyones faces as they left the auditorium at the end of the show, most of them still singing the tunes they just heard and noting that they must return! Most do too, this is a show that we have seen more times than we can disclose, and is a must see, if you haven’t booked yet please do!

Theatre Royal Plymouth

We may be biased but Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) is the jewel on the crown of the South West, there is no doubt but TRP always excel in providing exceptional customer service and put on the best of the best productions. We had the honour as Ambassador Members to utilise the Members Lounge for this visit that was just wonderful, out of the way of the hustle and bustle, quiet with table service from a wonderful front of house team made us feel extra special, the only downside was that we did not get the pre-show announcements clearly and so were rushing to our seats after the interval! Other than that it really was a wonderful space that is often overlooked!

Final Thoughts

Matinée Dog just adores this show, we have seen it several times (8 as patrons, even more so as Usher) and it honestly never fails to amaze us. Every part of this show is “Practically Perfect” in every way and we just cannot fault it. In our eyes Stefanie is Mary Poppins she portrays her sublimely (made me think of the original Mary from the film, here cockney accent, her looks, her stance, her stiff but kind upper lip was simply sensational with vocals to match), in a very different way to those that preceed her, just sensational! The costumes (of which there are many), the set, the lighting and more importantly the magic used throughout the performance is simply unforgettable.
