The Hamilton UK Tour has landed at Theatre Royal Plymouth for a 6 week run and we were delighted to catch the show on Monday 4 August 2025! Hamilton is the smash hit multi-award winning musical that is set to wow audiences as it visits the greatest cities in the UK, including Plymouth on its Tour!

Hamilton is winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Olivier Awards, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, so where do we even begin?
We had the pleasure of starting our evening in Theatre Royal’s members lounge, where we were able to sit in a comfortable lounge with table service provided by the wonderful TRP staff. This really did make our evening even more special, we were also able to return to our table for the interval where our chilled drinks were waiting, just an extra special added touch to the evening, especially with a shortened 15 minute interval.
★★★★★ HAMILTON ★★★★★
🎭 Who lives, who dies, who tells your story? In this case, I do, after a whirlwind of raps, revolutions, and ridiculously good performances at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical juggernaut has officially landed in the South West, and yes—Hamilton really is that good.
From the first breathless bars of the title track, this touring production snaps into gear with swagger, style, and sheer stagecraft. Even if you’ve heard the cast recording many times (guilty!), nothing prepares you for the electricity of experiencing it live.
I have to start off with noting that this really is not my favourite musical, and I have some personal gripes with it, but… putting my personal opinons aside… this production, these incredibly talented individuals put in their all to provide Plymouth with possibly the “greatest show, in the greatest city of them all!”
The Cast: Not Throwing Away Their Shot
Let’s talk cast—because literally, WOW.
Billy Nevers (Aaron Burr) is deliciously smooth and simmering with suppressed ambition. “The Room Where It Happens” practically set the stage on fire. Nevers was the standout performer throughought the entire show!
Jonathan Hermosa-Lopez (Alternate Alexander Hamilton) brings a magnetic mix of charm and intensity. Having now seen both Hermosa-Lopez and Marley Fenton I have to say Fenton has a slight edge but Hermosa-Lopez’s delivery is razor-sharp, but it’s his quieter moments—”Quiet Uptown,” anyone?—that really twist the heartstrings, played with raw emotion, please pass the tissues.
Louis Maskell (King George III) what can we say, Maskell brings the mad King to perfect life, with comedic traits and hypnotic tones, you really will “be back”! The portrayal was pure perfection, leaving us wanting more.
Also worth the instantaneous standing ovation of the entire audience in Plymouth:
-
Casey Al-Shaqsy as the angelic yet steel-spined Eliza
-
Chasity Crisp (Angelica) spitting lyrical fire in “Satisfied”
- Ashley J Daniels (Lafayette and Jefferson) really captured the audience and built strong ties.
The Staging: History Has Its Eyes On Plymouth
The show’s set is crafted from wooden scaffolding, ropes and swirling turntables, you could say it feels almost Shakespearean, while the impeccable choreography (yes, that Andy Blankenbuehler magic) moves like clockwork in a hurricane, not a single step was out of place and set pieces drift in and out without a hiccup.
Even on tour, nothing feels stripped back. The lighting is punchy, the sound design is tight (important when lyrics are flying faster than musket balls), and the energy from the cast is pure brilliance.
Final Verdict
Plymouth, you lucky lot. If you’ve never seen Hamilton before, prepare to be converted. If you’ve seen it before, this version still slaps, sobs, and soars in all the right places.
🎟️ Tickets may be tighter than George Washington’s uniform, but if you can grab one, do. Because this show is the revolution we all need right now!
