Our Review
Matinée Dog gives Wicked a whopping 97% and it truly is well deserved. We have seen this show twice in the West End and the UK touring production three times, safe to say we just cannot get enough of this spellbinding epic show. The Stephen Schwartz score gives you goosebumps at times. It truly is time to try “Defying Gravity” trust your instincts and book now! You honestly will love it. The show tells the untold story behind the wizard of Oz and how Glinda and Elphaba met, university of course.
Wicked tells the story of an unlikely but profound friendship between Glinda (the good witch) and a misunderstood green skinned Elphaba (the wicked witch). Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, thier friendship reached a crossroad and their lives then take two very different paths. Glinda’s desire for popularity sees her seduced by power. Whilst Elphaba is determined to remain true to herself, and those around her leads to some shocking consequences for her future.
As soon as the music starts to play you are spellbound, its magical tones and loudness blow you away. The show begins most suprisingly with the apparent death of the wicked witch, which we weren’t expecting. You are swiftly taken back to the start of Elphaba’s life and the story twists and turns its way back to this point for the finale. The costumes are stunning. The set is elaborate, a real feast for the eyes. The Dragon clock looms over the audience throughtout the performance, adding to the magic of what you are about to see!
The show hits all the right spots, there are parts to laugh at, parts to cry at and the spine-tingling epic hit that is “Defying Gravity” will have you in owe at the end of Act 1, it seriously makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention. There is no other words for that number other than WOW!
Here at Matinée Dog you can often see us listening too the official cast recording too, another true sign that the show has a lasting impact on its audiences. Wicked has been seen by well over 60million people worldwide! It really is a mega musical for the 21st century.
The Victoria Apollo Theatre
The Apollo is conveniently located just steps away from Vicoria underground, train and bus station. The Art Deco splendour of this Grade II listed building fabulously lit up in Green has been home to Wicked since its premiere in 2006! All of the 2,328 seats are located on just two levels, the stalls and circle. The theatre was originally built as a super cinema and opened in 1930. The theatre has a small cloakroom for bigger coats, several bars including “The Elixir Lounge” where you can grab a scrumptious cocktail pre show! Show merchandise is everywhere you look, there is some pretty stunning pieces too, from hoodies, t-shirts, umbrellas, books, CDs the magnificent “Grimmarie” and much more, make sure to swing by the shop during your visit and treat yourself.
Final Thoughts
We love this show and we are sure that you are green with envy if you haven’t seen it. A truly spectacular musical that hits all the right notes. They say almost everyone can see themselves in Elphaba and maybe this is one of the reasons the show has lasted so long (other than it is exceptional of course). The show is obviously an epic success. On a side note the book behind the show by Gregory Maguire is pretty epic too (please note that the book is not suitable for younger readers).
