I Should Be So Lucky the new musical that recently graced the stage, is a delightful blend of heartwarming nostalgia, infectious energy, and stellar performances that left the audience in awe. As the curtains rose, we found ourselves transported to a world where the ’80s pop sensation Kylie Minogue’s music takes centre stage, and what a spectacular journey it turned out to be! The production has been delightfully created by Debbie Isitt. Featuring incredible music from the Stock Aitken Waterman mega factory including “I Should Be So Lucky”, “Never Gonna Give You Up”, “Respectable”, “Better the Devil You Know” and many, many more.

A Night to Remember

It was an honour to have been invited by Theatre Royal Plymouth to the Press Night of the smash hit new musical on 4 December 2023, the evening began with a delightful pre-show cocktail party, we couldn’t refuse!

“I Should Be So Lucky,” the new musical that recently graced the stage, is a delightful blend of heartwarming nostalgia, infectious energy, and stellar performances that left the audience in awe. As the curtains rose, we found ourselves transported to a world where the ’80s pop sensation Kylie Minogue’s music takes centre stage, and what a spectacular journey it turned out to be!

From the opening notes of “I Should Be So Lucky,” the musical captured the essence of Minogue’s chart-topping hits, weaving them seamlessly into a narrative that was as charming as it was entertaining. The choreography, inspired by the iconic music videos of the ’80s, was a feast for the eyes, with dancers flawlessly executing intricate routines that paid homage to the era’s dance-pop culture.

Stellar Perfromances and Dynamic Chemistry

The cast, led by a standout performance from the lead actress Lucie-Mae Sumner in the role of a small-town dreamer Ella, brought the characters to life with infectious enthusiasm and a beautiful voice. The chemistry between the characters was palpable, adding depth to the storyline that revolved around love, dreams, and the pursuit of happiness. Giovanni Spanò brought Ash to life perfectly and had us lauging out loud throughout the performance. Jamie Chapman playing Spencer the paradise honeymoon resort manager was on point throughout the show! The supporting cast members and ensemble contributed to the show’s success with their impeccable timing and comedic flair.

The set design and costumes were a visual feast for the eyes, expertly recreating the vibrant and glamorous aesthetics of the ’80s. Packed full of glitter and sequins. The attention to detail in capturing the spirit of the era, from the neon lights to the retro fashion added an extra layer of authenticity to the production.

A Masterful Integration of Hits

One of the highlights of the musical was the masterful integration of Kylie Minogue’s hits into the plot. Each song felt purposeful, propelling the narrative forward and evoking a sense of nostalgia for fans of the pop icon. The clever use of a magic mirror and Kylie herself (fairy godmother esque) added depth to the production.

“I Should Be So Lucky” is a feel-good extravaganza that succeeds in paying homage to Kylie Minogue’s legacy while crafting a unique and engaging musical experience. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of ’80s music or simply looking for a night of pure entertainment, this musical is a must-see. Prepare to be swept away by the infectious energy, catchy tunes, and heartwarming story that make “I Should Be So Lucky” an absolute triumph on the musical stage not to forget some side-splittingly funny moments throughout that will have you at points crying with laughter.

The production concludes with a get-on-your-feet dance-off between the audience and cast, skillfully accompanied by the live band. This night was truly memorable, filled with escapism and fun. The show continues to play at Theatre Royal Plymouth until Saturday 9 December 2023 (book tickets here).
