We were delighted to be invited to press night for Come From Away at Theatre Royal Plymouth on Tuesday 9 April 2024 for the 7:30pm evening show. We were warmly welcomed by a little badge gift and a reception and mingle in the gallery ahead of curtain up which made the evening extra special. This four time Olivier award winning production is a must see!

With book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, incredible lighting design by Howell Binkley this production shines bright like a diamond, sensational.

A Transcendent Tale of Unity and Compassion

Musical Brilliance That Soars to New Heights

The musical score of Come From Away is a mesmerizing blend of folk, rock, and traditional Newfoundland tunes. From foot-stomping anthems to haunting ballads, each song is expertly crafted to evoke a myriad of emotions. Under the masterful direction of the musical team, every note resonates with power and poignancy, leaving a lasting impression on all who experience it. The band are visible throughout the performance and play an incredible “band-off” at the end of the show, make sure you stay and watch, what incredible talent.

Captivating Set Design and Choreography

Even though minimal, the set design and incredible lighting transports the audience to the remote town of Gander, Newfoundland, with stunning authenticity. From the cozy confines of the local pub to the vast expanse of the makeshift shelters and wide open spaces, every detail is meticulously crafted to immerse viewers in the story’s setting.  Coupled with dynamic choreography that captures the hustle and bustle of a community coming together in crisis, the result is a visual spectacle that delights the senses.

A Timely Reminder of the Power of Kindness

In today’s tumultuous world, Come From Away serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy, compassion, and understanding. As the characters grapple with fear, uncertainty, and cultural differences, they ultimately find solace in their shared humanity. It’s a message that resonates deeply with audiences of all ages, making this musical not only entertaining but also profoundly impactful, a phenomenal show! The entire audience of well over 1,200 people were instantly on their feet in what I can only describe as the quickest standing ovation I have ever seen!

Stellar Casting

This cast were stellar, the absolute skill shone through, with a handful of actors playing multiple people throughouth the 90 minute performance, it was incredible that the pace was never lost and you never once wondered who was who. For us there were a few stand-out performances by Mark Dugdale (Kevin T, Garth and Others) with charming smile and comedic wit you couldn’t help but fall in love with his charecters. Amanda Henderson (Beulah and Others) was another that just radiated brillance on stage, her larger than life charecterisation of Beulah was nothing short of exceptional. Sara Poyzer’s (Beverley, Annette and Others) rendition of “Me and The Sky” made the hairs on the backs of our necks stand on end, an incredibly talented lady with the most powerful voice, sensational. I know we have pointed out a few individuals here but the entire cast made this show STAND-OUT, we really cannot fault any of them!
